'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)' — The Walker Brothers

Only now, 55 years after my junior year at Washington High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, do I learn who sang this wonderful song that sounded great even on a crummy AM car radio.

The Walker Brothers (Scott Engel, John Maus, and Gary Leeds) were an American trio that hit big in the U.K. from 1965-1967.

At one time, their fan club was bigger than the Beatles in the United Kingdom.

"The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" was their second #1 hit in 1966 in the U.K. and #13 in the US.

The enigmatic lead singer, Scott Walker, later had a very successful solo career and has been cited as influential to many British recording artists including David Bowie and Radiohead.

I recently watched this documentary entitled "Scott Walker: 30 Century Man"

which explored the life of this enigmatic musician from his roots in Hamilton, Ohio through his remarkable career in the U.K.

From Wikipedia:

Noel Scott Engel, better known by the stage name Scott Walker, was an American singer-songwriter, composer and record producer who resided in England.

Walker was known for his baritone voice and an unorthodox career path which took him from 1960s teen pop icon to 21st-century avant-garde musician.

Walker's success was largely in the United Kingdom, where his first four solo albums reached the top ten.

He lived in the U.K. from 1965 and became a U.K. citizen in 1970.

Rising to fame in the mid-1960s as frontman of the pop music trio the Walker Brothers, he began a solo career with 1967's Scott, moving toward an increasingly challenging style on late-1960s baroque pop albums such as Scott 3 and Scott 4 (both 1969).
After sales of his solo work started to decrease, he reunited with the Walker Brothers in the mid-1970s.
From the mid-1980s onward, Walker revived his solo career while moving in an increasingly avant-garde direction; of this period in his career, The Guardian said "Imagine Andy Williams reinventing himself as Stockhausen."
Walker's 1960s recordings were highly regarded by the 1980s U.K. underground music scene, and gained a cult following.
In October 2003, Walker was given an award for his contribution to music by Q magazine, presented by Jarvis Cocker of Pulp.
Walker received a standing ovation at the presentation.
This award had been presented only twice before, the first time to Phil Spector, and the second to Brian Eno.
Walker stated in the documentary film Scott Walker: 30 Century Man and in numerous interviews that for his entire career he had not listened to any of his own work after completion, either due to exhaustion from the project or self-criticism.
Walker continued to record until 2018.
He was described by the BBC upon his death in 2019 at age 76 as "one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in rock history."
Here's a Guardian appreciation of 10 of his greatest hits.

Boora Pyramid — Eileen MacDonagh

Guess again

The structure, created in 2002, is located in Lough Boora, County Offaly, Ireland.

Apart from the pyramid, the view is remarkably similar to that of my backyard out the window, looking northwest toward the Blue Ridge Mountains some 20 miles away.
