Pineapple Throwdown: Dole v Del Monte

I've always loved comparing things and testing and experimenting, to the point I drive most people nuts.

It's been that way since I was a boy, with no loss of curiosity.

The other day I bought a can of Dole sliced pineapple and was struck by how pale and washed out the fruit appeared, not at all appetizing.

Tasted OK, but still.

I then procured an identically sized can of Del Monte pineapple and compared the two.

As any fool can plainly see in the photo up top — taken by my Crack Photography Team©® — Del Monte's slice looks the way pineapple should look, a nice bright yellow.

Also, the Del Monte slice has perfectly smooth edges, while the Dole slice's outside edge is somewhat frayed, as if the cutting blade could use some sharpening.

Most important, The Del Monte was distinctly sweeter.

So, if you're gonna serve sliced pineapple, might as well bump up the eye candy index as far as it goes along with superior tasting fruit.

Fair warning: Dole seems to have title to the bulk of the canned fruit aisle and shelves, so finding a can of Del Monte won't be easy.

Of course, the chance that anyone reading this will care enough to take the time and trouble approaches zero, so it's probably a moot point.

there's a couple tricks on the web for pineapple-mouth

one of which is to soak the fresh peeled pineapple in salt water

look it up?

I know what you mean.
Very ripe, or even overripe pineapple has much less of that raw-mouth effect.
And it's yummy.

And, thank you, Bruce, for confirming my suspicion about the added sugar.

So, if I added enough sugar to either one, it might take that nasty mouth-bite right away!
Next grocery order I make, I'm getting a can of each, if available, and a five lb. bag of sugar. Gonna tame these pineapples!

Or not.

I love these comparison test thingies, too. More, Joe!

I would do this one in my own kitchen laboratory, but I find that pineapple, fresh or canned, just excoriates the living hell out of my mouth's palates and membranes and internal coverings and whatnots, so much so that just brushing my teeth after a taste-off is like scrubbing with crushed glass and tiny razors.

But I do love the pineappley taste. Just wish it wasn't such a cruel fruit.

I'll have to check if the same holds here in Sweden! I bought a can of Dole's Tropical Gold Premium Pineapple just a couple of days ago, and was really happy with it.

Need to compare with fresh pineapple for complete data. ;-)

More yellow coloring added?
More sugar added?
Seems suspicious to me.

Well, it's a "thanks!" from me.

I always appreciate comparisons.

I used to work for Del Monte - the R&D side is extraordinary (they're pretty serious about quality).

This is another of their unsung wonders that I never knew about until I was given a case or two from work: https://www.delmonte.com/products/vegetables/zucchini/zucchini-italian-style-tomato-sauce

If I've had canned pineapple in the last 25 years, it's without my knowing. Whole pineapple was a staple in our house for a couple of years. It's not expensive either, but if you're stocking a bunker, not a good choice.
