Pitching a Yurt in the Arctic Winter

From Kottke:

Every few days, Nenet reindeer herders in the Siberian Arctic break camp and erect their tents (called chums) in a new location.

The video above documents how they do it.

The Nenet reindeer herders need to move their tent every few days throughout most of the year.

Every time they migrate they must pack the whole tent away, drag it across the tundra on sledges, and erect it again in a fresh place, sometimes in temperatures of minus thirty degrees.

Survival depends on working together as a team.

After staying in the wooded taiga for two months they start to migrate north following the ancient paths of migrating reindeer (caribou).

In four months they will travel up to 750 miles and must pack and move every three to five days to keep up with their herd.

They must reach their summer quarters before the snows melt and flood great rivers with icy waters too cold and deep for the calves, born along the way, to cross.

Sign of the Apocalypse: Eggo Frosted Maple Syrup Pop-Tarts

Screen Shot 2021-10-05 at 7.17.02 PM

Last night I happened on this improbable mash-up in a tweet by Adam P. Knave, who wrote, "Yes, there are going to be Eggo/syrup flavored... Pop-Tarts. I mean, if you're gonna have a Pop-Tart, why not just put a waffle in the toaster?"

Adam Barnhardt's comicbook.com story has the details; his piece follows.

Pop-Tarts Unveils New Eggo Flavor

If you thought a film like Avengers: Infinity War was the most ambitious crossover you've ever seen... well, you might want to take a quick seat.

Yesterday the folks at Kellogg's unveiled a new crossover product between two of the company's flagship brands, and the end result might be a little divisive.

Beginning later this year, breakfast fiends will be able to purchase Eggo-flavored Pop-Tarts.

You read that right, Pop-Tarts flavored like one of the most popular waffle brands on the sun.

More specifically, the new item is called Eggo Frosted Maple Syrup Pop-Tarts, combining the iconic breakfast condiment with two separate pastries.

A press release distributed from Kellogg's promises a "flaky, buttery-yellow crust, reminiscent of an Eggo waffle" while the Pop-Tart will include a "sweet, maple-flavored filling." Everything will then be topped with white icing and "a waffle-like grid pattern made from yellow-string icing."

As of now, it seems like this item will be a permanent item as no limited-edition details are included in Kellogg's marketing material.

Packages of the breakfast treats will be available starting in December and will carry an MSRP of $2.99 for an 8-count box.

The new crossover item will be available in 2-count packs at select convenience stores across the country sometime at a later date.
