'Beneath The Ice' — The hidden mysteries of glacier caves

While we await the first manned mission to Europa's surface — which I predict to occur c. 2080 — there's much to explore beneath Greenland's ice sheet and similar glacier-covered locales on Earth.

This excellent New York Times story with its associated photography is an excellent first step.

Watch the movie in its entirety here.

Free, the way we like it.

Paying bills online: My capitulation.

Screen Shot 2021-10-13 at 1.29.52 PM

After decades of contending I would never, ever pay bills online as opposed to writing a monthly check, I've cracked and gone over to the virtual side.

Because the USPS Podunkville operation has become so broken that:

A few months ago I had to pay a late fee to SunTrust because they received my mortgage payment after the due date even though I mailed it 10 days before the deadline.

A week ago I got a Past Due notice from County Waste, my trash pickup company, stating that they hadn't received my payments for the previous two months. I went back and checked and sure enough, my last check to them was written in July. That's because I didn't receive a statement in August or September.

• Yesterday I received my bill from AT&T Mobility: it was due two days earlier.

Tell you what, though, there's a lot of pain involved in setting up automatic payments, at least with County Waste and AT&T Mobility:

• It took about a half hour and a lot of irritation/annoyance to finally succeed in creating auto-bill-pay with County Waste.

• AT&T Mobility has not 1 not 2 but different websites for paying your bill online; I am not making this up. They are:

I tried all three but gave up after failing with each.

I'll try again once I've recovered from my frustration.

Leading-edge Bronze Age technology

Wrote Alison Fisk:

Above, a stunning example of new technology in the Bronze Age.

This is a 4,500 year-old stone mold, found in Shropshire, England, which was used to cast 5 different-sized bronze axe heads at a time when the metal was replacing tools and weapons made from stone, bone, and wood.

It is currently on display at the Shrewsbury Museum "Gathering Light" exhibition, through December 12, 2021.
