In Praise of Subtitles on English Language Films

Recent posts here have featured discussions about why it seems increasingly difficult to understand dialogue in movies.

Sometimes my subtitle settings get messed up and English subtitles appear on movies in English.

Up to now I've stopped the film, gone into my Apple TV settings, and made it so the subtitles didn't appear.

But for one reason or another, last night when subtitles appeared on "Station Eleven" (above and below) I let them stay.

It turned out that my watching experience was distinctly better with the help of the subtitles, as the dialogue was often muddy and incomprehensible.

Sometimes when I read what was being said I realized that no way would I have understood those words without reading them as they were spoken.

From now on subtitles on all movies are my default setting.
