Meet Desdemona

Pictured above and below, she/it's the lead singer for Dr. Ben Goertzel's jazz fusion band.

Goertzel, who runs SingularityNET, for a second there thought she was sentient.

All this and much, much more about the rise of powerful AI and its acolytes is related in Cade Metz's superb New York Times story, which will provide you with a historical —  and future — context in which to place what exists and what is to come.

Can't quite get your head around all this?

I hear you.

Singularity.NET welcomes you.

I especially like the "Valis" poster behind Desdemona and Goertzel in the Times photo below.

For those not acolytes of Philip K. Dick, spiritual father figure of AI, "Valis" is the title of his 1981 novel.

It is an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligence System, Dick's gnostic vision of God.

NASA Space Exposed Seeds

In the videos above and below you will see a metallic foil packet containing tomato seeds I requested from NASA.

Full disclosure: I had to lie and pretend I was a teacher to get them.

The seeds went to space on April 6, 1984 aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, spent nearly six years in orbit in the Long Duration Exposure Facility, and returned to Earth on January 20, 1990 on Space Shuttle Columbia.

I long ago decided to keep them in their little container until I arrive on Mars, where I will plant them in Martian soil and call them Jomatoes.

Catchy, what?

The Scottish Highlands, the Appalachians, and the Atlas Mountains are the same mountain range

Screen Shot 2022-08-07 at 12.06.00 PM

Say what?

From VividMaps:

The Central Pangean Mountains were a great mountain chain in the middle part of the supercontinent Pangaea that stretched across the continent from northeast to southwest during the Carboniferous, Permian Triassic periods. The ridge was formed as a consequence of a collision between the supercontinents Laurussia and Gondwana during the formation of Pangaea. It was similar to the present Himalayas at its highest elevation during the beginning of the Permian period.

It’s hard to imagine now that that the Scottish Highlandsthe Appalachiansthe Ouachita Mountains, and the Little Atlas of Morocco were all once part of the same mountain range.

During the Permian period, the Central Pangean were subjected to significant physical weathering, decreasing their peak height and forming many deep intermontane plains. By the Middle Triassic, the mountain sierras had been considerably reduced in size. By the beginning of the Jurassic period (200 million years ago), the Pangean chain in Western Europe had disappeared, becoming highland regions separated by deep marine basins.
