The DART spacecraft will intentionally crash into the asteroid Dimorphos at 7:14 p.m. ET on Monday, September 26, 2022 to see if kinetic force can change its orbit.

 

Why?

 

If this test is successful, the same technique could be used to deflect an Earth-threatening asteroid in the future, should one ever be discovered.

 

DART's target asteroid is NOT a threat to Earth before, during or after the impact event.
