You can buy a laser turntable that reads the grooves via laser light without touching the vinyl, so no wear.
A laser-controlled turntable has been suggested, which plays like any normal turntable, but uses lasers to Zap any unauthorized folks who attempt to touch the turntable. This would help control those who handle a record by the playing surface instead of the edges.
