Sabrina Imbler's New York Times story took a deep dive into the phenomenon of firefly synchronization.
Finally, for those of you who are desperate for something, anything to do rather than what you're supposed to be doing (I was like that once, for a long, long time... but I digress), here's a Science magazine paper titled "Self-organization in natural swarms of Photinus carolinus synchronous fireflies" in its entirety.

When the lightning bugs are out, the mosquitoes are usually out, too.
Light colored loose-fitting clothing, long sleeves & pants (tucked into socks), no B.O., and try not to breathe out much.
