I suppose asking why on earth anyone would want, rather, need, to have perfectly squared-up, folded fitted sheets could create an avalanche of reasonable-sounding theories, and anyway I do much stupider and pointless routines all the time. I can think of one situation - I guess if you had a tiny linen chest and a massive linen inventory, and every millimeter of space had to be filled within an inch (millimeter) of its life, obsessive folding and squaring-up could be a life saver.

I do a half-assed fold-over & repeat kind of thing with the fitted sheet for its storage, then when the day arrives that it is to be deployed, I stretch it so tightly over the mattress using those difficult, painful-to-fingertips little barrel shaped things that anchor sheet to mattress beading with a vengeance on all four sides so that a wrinkle or crease doesn't stand a chance. This is the only point at which I can understand that a flat, beautifully smooth fitted sheet has any merit whatsoever.

Achieving step 4 is a lot harder than it looks, and things go downhill from there
