Deconstructing and Restoring a 100-Year-Old Book
Wrote Kottke:
Sophia Bogle is an expert at restoring old books.
I was riveted by this video in which she takes you through the deconstruction and restoration process of a century-old first edition of Frank L. Baum's "The Lost Princess of Oz."
There's a tour of her workshop in which she describes some of the tools she uses (e.g. a repair knife she designed herself to resemble a fingertip).
From Boing Boing:
Bogle shows us why restoring an old, fragile book is an incredibly delicate undertaking: one wrong move can result in irreversible damage.
The process can take 8-12 hours.
She said it feels like "book surgery" when she's in the midst of a reconstruction.
