Soviet cars weren't the most comfortable automobiles in the world.

Moskvitch, Volga, and Zaporozhets were the most popular makes.

Volgas were built to last in the harsh climate and rough roads of the Soviet Union, with high ground clearance (which gives them a characteristic "high" look, contrary to "low-long-sleek" look of Western cars with similar design), rugged suspension, strong and forgiving engine, and rustproofing on a scale unheard of in the 1950s.

ZAZ-968 Zaporozhets was produced from 1972 to 1980. It was the cheapest Soviet car and so the most affordable to common people. At the same time, it was rather sturdy and well suited to Soviet roads.

Yes, I'm sure we could all come up with a few — but she did it.

As only she can.

Cento Caponata — It's Back!

1111

Back when I lived in LA in the 60s/70s/80s, this wonderful canned mélange of eggplant, tomatoes, celery, olives, onions, capers, wine vinegar, and olive oil was one of my go-to staples.

After I moved to Virginia I couldn't find it anywhere.

Then it appeared on my Amazon page last week for no apparent reason.

Back then it came in a taller can than today's iteration, with much more blue in the label, but the instant I opened a can and inhaled, all the deliciousness of old flooded my senses.

Still made in Italy.

So good.

One 7 ounce can costs $6; 4 cans: $18.35; 12 cans: $38.99, all here.
