'Roadside Picnic' — Arkady and Boris Strugatsky
This classic 1972 science fiction novella shimmers with mystery each time I reread it.
I can't imagine how powerful it must be in the original Russian.
It's as if you're actually there on the ground with the artifacts of an inconceivably advanced civilization's abandoned objects, still possessed of otherworldly powers.
Someday this story will be eclipsed by reality.
Alas, you and I will be long vanished when that happens.
Unless, of course, it turns out that our government has finally decided it can no longer keep its deepest black secrets out of view.
In the meantime, you can read or download the story here.
Free, the way we like it.

I read this the last time you featured it.
I was deep into it when I had to put it down and tend to my laundry.
Now, whenever I fold t-shirts, I think of it.
