Saturday Night at the Movies: 'On The Beach'

I stumbled on this remastered 1440p full version of the classic 1959 film last week and instantly dropped everything to watch it before it got taken down.

It's still up as of now but could disappear at any moment.

Fair warning.

Incredible cast including Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins, produced and directed by Stanley Kramer.

Bonus: a time machine trip to late 1950s Australia.

BehindTheMedspeak: Tacit Knowledge

1

When I go in for a screening colonoscopy I enjoy watching the nurse or tech put in my IV.

I don't mention my 38 years as an anesthesiologist having starting many thousands of them.

I think it's fair to say it's one of my areas of expertise.

Something you won't find in textbooks or guides: inserting an IV into an upside down "Y" vein structure on the back of a hand, at the fork — in the graphic below, right where the horizontal dotted line crosses the vein — makes success far more likely than using either of the two feeder veins or the unified structure above the fork.

                            2

Why?

Because the two branches each exert traction on their meeting point such that the apex is fixed and immobile, unlike any of the other three veins above and below, which being unanchored will tend to slide sideways when the IV needle impacts them.

Tacit knowledge, indeed.

Related: Ethan Rahn's essay titled "Tacit Knowledge is Dangerous."

Though it deals with software engineering and coding, it shares the same focus as my observations above, namely that there will always be unwritten knowledge that could make success more likely, but oftimes that knowledge exists outside the time and place where it can be potentially useful.

T&CO Cuff Links

I saw these in an ad in the New York Times and at first glance thought they read "TACO" — then the penny dropped and I realized they were from Tiffany.

Tiffany, like Apple ("Sent from my iPad"), is one of many luxe companies that have succeeded in getting people to pay premium prices for their products and then advertise them while in use.
