Helpful Hints from joeeze: Never again leave something behind in a hotel safe

Safe

"To avoid leaving behind valuables in a room safe, put one of the shoes you're planning to wear on departure inside or on top of the safe."

Genius.

I recommend inside rather than on top.

It just occurred to me that never once in my life have I ever used a hotel safe.

Huh.

Perhaps others reading this have experience with one.

If you've got nothing else to do, throw us a bone.

a binder clip is useful to close the inevitable gap in the curtains that allows full morning light to stream in before your alarm.

I've traveled to Las Vegas the past 17 years for the first weekend of March Madness with a group of good friends. Because it is a guys' weekend of drinking and betting, things can get a little chaotic. With that in mind I always carry my driver's license and a credit card on me when out while using the hotel safe on check-in to hold my passport and a second credit card. Should things go sideways, and my wallet get lost or stolen, I know I still have ID to get on the plane home and a card to cover expenses. Never had to use it, but it gives me peace of mind. A second, unrelated tip for trips of this kind: as soon as you get to your room take a picture of the door showing the room number. These hotels are huge and it's easy to get disoriented after a long night on the Strip. A look at the phone picture is all it takes to make sure you get to the room you're supposed to (that and remembering which hotel you're staying at).
