For untrained rescuers helping adult victims of cardiac arrest, compression-only CPR (without artificial ventilation) is recommended, as it is easier to perform. In adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, compression-only CPR by the lay public has an equal or higher success rate than CPR with artificial ventilation.

Want to double the likelihood of success?

Simple — while CPR is happening, have someone pick up both feet of the unconscious person, then hold them a couple feet above the ground.

This lets gravity move about one-third of the individual's total circulating blood volume from the legs into the central circulation, helping the heart fill and making CPR more effective.
