Rolex Deep Sea Special (c. 1959-60)
According to Rolex, "Never seen by the public until 2010, this Rolex model [above] descended nearly 7 miles, and withstood 8 tons of pressure per square inch."
It's one of possibly fewer than 10 exemplars, made in stainless steel and fitted with stainless steel or stainless steel and gold bracelets.
On January 23, 1960 it accompanied U.S. Navy Captain (Ret.) Don Walsh, "who piloted the historic U.S. Navy bathyscaphe Trieste 35,800 feet below the surface, to the deepest point on the planet."

Sold Out
From time to time a reader comments or emails me in frustration about not being able to procure something or other I've featured here that at one time was for sale.
Sometimes it's already sold out at the time I discover it but it's so cool it doesn't matter if it's available anymore or not.
As Calvin Klein once said, in response to people complaining about the exorbitant cost of some of his clothing, "You don't need to buy anything — just feel the fabric."
Precisely.
Do a retina-based pixelscan and you'll find you can get quite a lot of enjoyment without diminishing your bank account one red cent.
Lots of times it's a variation on the old Yogi Berra conundrum* as to what happens once I feature something, to wit: as soon as it goes up, the thing sells out.
Full disclosure: When I like something a lot I order it before I post it.
Is that wrong?
Should I be like a good commander and make sure the troops are fed first and only then see if there's anything left for me?
Napoleon once remarked, "An army advances on its stomach."
And retreats the same way, history points out.
But I digress.
Calvin Klein, Yogi Berra, and Napoleon in one post: How'd he do that, anyway?
Ahem.
*"Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."
