'Brainstorm'

A superb 1983 movie starring, among others, Natalie Wood — whose still-mysterious death on November 29, 1981 occurred during filming — and Christopher Walken.

It's one of two films (the other being the excellent "Silent Running") directed by the great Douglas Trumbull, who pioneered innovative special effects used in "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "Blade Runner," and "The Tree of Life."

The film — in which scientists create a machine with the capability of recording and subsequently playing back all experiences such that they are indistinguishable from reality — was completed after Wood's death and recut to allow use of the scenes she'd already completed.

Watch it here.

"Total Recall," far more frequently referenced, came out in 1990.

1. Watch Brainstorm free! The way Joe likes it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EtibuhVp-w

2. The story for the film came from Bruce Joel Rubin. Rubin's first film.
Rubin also wrote Ghost (Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), Jacob's Ladder, Sleeping with the Enemy, My Life (wrote and directed), Deep Impact, The Last Mimsy, and The Time Traveler's Wife. Seen 'em all; enjoyed 'em all. Especially My Life.
Rubin says he had a vision in the sandbox when he was 5 years old and has lived his life to fulfill that vision.
Interesting dude. His website: https://www.brucejoelrubin.com/
