The Forgotten Greatness of W.G. Sebald

391

Who?

81twqT5U1YL._SL1500_

I'm betting very few reading this have ever heard of him.

He was a German author whose four books ("Vertigo," 1990; "The Emigrants," 1992; "The Rings of Saturn," 1995; "Austerlitz," 2001) were translated into English and many other languages and highly praised by many of the world's greatest writers as they appeared during the latter part of the last century. He was on the very short list every year for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He died on December 14, 2001 in Norfolk, England at the age of 57 when the car he was driving swerved into an oncoming truck.

He apparently died instantly. The coroner's report, released some six months after the accident, stated that Sebald had suffered a heart attack and had died of this condition before his car swerved across the road.

Should you care to learn more about this singular author, you could do worse than start with this 2011 article from the New Yorker and this 2022 piece from the Guardian.

World's Most Elegant — And Expensive — Mouse

454

From the website:

Handmade of Grade 1 titanium with a neodymium scroll wheel.

Instead of being a practical object, this mouse was designed to be an expression of identity, luxury, and elegance.

The outer shell of the mouse is constructed of titanium, a high-quality metal used in jewelry and the space industry.

It is created in an entirely manual process, from initial "forming" to applying the final protective layer.

A 2009 design by Netherlands-based Intelligent Design.
