That is totally over-engineered, and not necessarily in a good way.
I also note he did not appear to use any anticoagulant... I'm pretty sure a shortened 24g cannula would make a better writing instrument when attached to an anticoagulated syringe. Additionally, the syringe would benefit from having something to agitate the blood, such as what is in an arterial blood gas syringe (which comes preloaded with a ball bearing and anticoagulant...
