For someone like me, who does not use alot of butter, and when I do, a "pat" is usually not soft enough to spread easily, or is too much for the needed use. So, I have switched to using a simple vegitable peeler to "shave" a lenght of butter. This comes out so thin, that even if the butter is frozen, it spreads easily, also it's very easy to get a controlled amount with each swipe of the peeler. So $1.99 peeler for the win...
